In March 2024, I posted this question on my blog: Will Chat GPT Emerge as the Google Slayer in AI Domination?
At the time, OpenAI was leading the conversation, while Google seemed to be struggling and unsure of its AI direction—facing challenges with Bard and mishaps with Gemini (specifically the image generation controversies that forced Google to pause the feature).
The Big Switch
Fast forward to May 2025. After watching Google I/O a couple of days ago, my question has changed—or rather, an alternate question is: Is Google becoming the Apple Killer?
Google didn’t just respond to OpenAI at its I/O event—it sidestepped them entirely and went straight for the AI ecosystem. And it did so with confidence and clarity.
A few highlights:
– Gemini Live: Real-time voice conversations that make Siri feel like a decade-old command tool.
-Android Auto AI: Google turned the car into a digital co-pilot with contextual suggestions. CarPlay? Mostly just screen mirroring.
-Universal Gemini Integration: AI woven into every device—phones, TVs, wearables, homes. Apple’s approach feels disconnected.
-Project Astra: Visual AI that sees and responds to the world in real time. Apple’s offering feels like a beta.
The Ecosystem War 2.0
Google isn’t just adding AI features—it’s reshaping what a digital ecosystem powered by AI means.
Apple built its moat with polished hardware and design. And when it announced Apple Intelligence, it looked like a potential game changer—and it still is—but it’s struggling to find its footing. Some say Apple is really behind in AI. Meanwhile, Google has built a unified ecosystem with predictive intelligence and seamless integration.
Today, Apple helps you get things done.
Google’s AI suggests what you didn’t know you needed to do.
In My Humble Opinion: “The Apple Issue”
Apple Intelligence feels to me very cautious—more like a safe update than a leap forward. It’s built to protect a business model centered on premium hardware and user privacy.
Google, on the other hand, is thriving on data and feedback. AI is in its DNA.
The New Question
So the question today isn’t “Can Apple keep up?” Apple will respond, no doubt.
But can it reclaim its advantage—as arguably the best-designed and most cohesive ecosystem?
Can Apple regain its leadership now that Google has set the bar so high?
We’ll find out in 12 months.
